The Trees at Beggars Rigg - Happy Anniversary!

Friday, 18 April 2025

Happy Third Birthday to all the little (getting big!) saplings and the beautiful Silver Birch and Cherry Trees, planted on a joyous spring day, March 19th 2022.

The children were so engaged, and interested.

NCC closed one side of the road, as we had children and volunteers working.

It was very hard work for Mike Evens, and others, digging the very large holes for the five standards!

Each year a group of Rothbury Tree Wardens go along each week, throughout the summer, to check on the trees, remove grass and weeds from the base of them. Sometimes the tree guards need to be replaced. Occasionally a tree has not survived, so we replace it.

It was horrible when one of the main tree protection cages was stolen from one of the standard trees. But, thankfully, NCC soon replaced it.

Today, John and I did the first turn on the Sapling Rota for 2025. They are all looking really good! Lots of pretty spring flowers coming through also.

So if you are wondering what people in Hi Viz are doing along that verge each week, they are Rothbury Tree Wardens, collecting the litter, and taking care of the young trees!

One of the things we are all looking forward to, is being able to remove the tree protectors. One of the jobs we do throughout the summer, is take the guards off, remove the grass which has grown up inside, then replace the guard.

Tree Guards (which have been written about on here before) are a pain. All too often people plant trees and hedges, then do not have the time or the resources to remove them. Rothbury Tree Wardens have removed lots of guards, when requested. If you could do with a hand for this necessary, but time consuming, job, get it touch.

We have also helped with tree planting. Again, if you could do with a hand, get in touch.
